Resume for Carole Coode
“Warringah”

We started in Labradors in Australia in 1967, “Basker” was a first anniversary present to me from David, and Basker’s nephew (bought the following year for him), started us off. Firstly in Obedience where they both gained titles and David and I passed our exams to be Obedience judges. We started to show a little down in Australia, and when we moved up to Malaysia (for David’s work) we became more bitten by the showing bug.

When we returned to England in mid 1974 we were well read, having consumed every Labrador book we could get our hands on, and knew the type of Labrador we wanted to own and breed. From the Lawnwoods kennels we acquired a good yellow foundation bitch, in Brentville Marcella of Lawnwood. Marjorie also have us a little while later the good black bitch Lawnwoods Hot Pants of Warringah.

From these two bitches the entire Warringah kennel has been formed. Breeding back into lines that suited them we have been very successful over the years breeding a total of 18 Labrador Champions, all but three, being full champions, equally divided between blacks and yellows. We have also always carried the chocolate colour in the black line, through Hot Pants whose father was Ch Lawnwoods Hot Chocolate. There have been a further four bitches with CC’s ; at the time of writing we have won a total of 87 CC’s and 81 Res CC’s in Labradors. In the last 25 years we have made up a quarter of all the full Labrador Champions in the UK and have the only champion bitch with a KC Working Gundog Certificate.

In our two other breeds German Shorthaired Pointers and Sussex spaniels added 23 and 18 years ago respectively we have gained a further four champions, two in each breed with two more GSP bitches with CC’s. All Champions over the three breeds except the first GSP male have been home bred. Bring our total of CC’s to 121 with 117 Reserves in total.

Until David retired two years ago he wasn’t as “hands on” as he would have liked due to working 75% of the year abroad, but he was always in the ring when ever he could be. All decisions about breeding and puppies was always a joint decision. Since his retirement he has taken over all the field training of the dogs and last winter we had 8 trained Labradors for him to choose from for his two days a week picking up in the season.

It has always been very important to us as judges that the Labrador should look fit and healthy, be correctly constructed to enable him to do the job of work that he was designed for, neither of us likes a fat Labrador and we like to see good muscle tone.

As construction is so important to me – I became a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer, going round giving lectures on “Confirmation & Movement” to aspiring judges, and now also the “Hands On” Judging Assessments - I also judge other breeds in the Gundog Group and award CC’s in 21 Breeds , as well as awarding the Gundog Group at Championship Shows. I am on the top judging lists for American Cockers, Field Spaniels and Large Munsterlanders, these being the only 3 Gundog breeds in the UK that I do not currently give CCs for but will be automatically approved for these when invited.

There are a few goals that I want to achieve still, and if I try real hard perhaps I will be lucky enough!!!
